Monika Liu’s latest single is a confusing piece that will make you feel either irritation or fascination.
Bossa (English: Boss) is four minutes spent rattling around inside Liu’s mind on a drug induced trip. The slow beat drives the song in a low gear which aggressively cuts through. Everything else on this track is there to detract from the lazy beat.
Liu’s voice equally balances the contrast between soft brassy from the outset of the song where bassy synths peak and trough on every other beat.
Bossa is a softer continuation of Sentimentai. The former is less accessible than the latter but it feels more authentically Liu that way.
This new release might fly under the radar but if it peaks it will find a loving and appreciative audience.
