Malik Harris’ follow-up single to Rockstars is a far more palatable listen than the song that he finished last at Eurovision with for Germany last month.
You & I takes a little too long to get going but there is a payoff after the time wasting guitar picking and finger clicking. A layered beat eventually builds up through the verse before a pleasant, chilled out melody in the chorus takes a lead.
Harris plays the undeserving victim in a trying story about being forgotten in a one way relationship. It’s refreshing to hear this story told from a male perspective.
The juxtaposition of the heartbreaking lyrics with the happy melody would ordinarily be confusing but Harris balances the two opposites perfectly to create a track to get loose feet tapping the floor.
