Kalush Orchestra’s first release since winning Eurovision is a welcome collaboration with The Rasmus.
In The Shadows of Ukraine is a reworking of The Rasmus’ 2003 track In The Shadows with some of the rock elements swapped out in favour of Kalush Orchestra’s folk sound. The Ukrainian wind instrument the telenka opens the track before soft and dull guitars play the instantly recognisable and always enjoyable hook of In The Shadows.
The Rasmus frontman Lauri Ylönen leads the track for the first minute and for the chorus, giving it some heft. Kalush Orchestra’s Oleh Psiuk picks up the tempo with a fast-paced rap. The combination of their differing styles makes the track endlessly engaging and interesting.
Both bands have proved that music, despite being so different, is an equaliser.
