Nadir Rustamli has fallen into the same trap as his Eurovision compatriots and predecessors by expecting success owing to a Swedish songwriting team. 

Fade To Black starts with the piano predictability that we came to expect from Azerbaijan a decade ago. The return to this key element is entirely boring and means the first minute could be written off. 

Rustamli can sing. His vocal range can’t be denied and he brings the song to life in the closing seconds but it’s too little, too late. 

With a lack of Azeri authenticity and a less than captivating composition, Fade To Black is left fumbling around for any element that will capture the imagination of even its intended audience.
