There are certain expectations that some audiences possess when it comes to Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest. No Rules is a hypercharged realisation of those expectations.
Just because it is noted as a less-than-serious Eurovision song, No Rules should still be judged on the same musical merits as any other track, and its musical merits stack high above those of some other songs entered into the contest this year.
The track has been expertly produced, with each individual element and hook having time to breathe and carry out its duty. The call of an eagle, pulsating and bouncy synths, driving electronic beats, low harmonies. Nothing is out of place.
Both Windows95man and vocalist Henri Piispanen allow their personalities to shine through, too. By the way, just in case you were dazed by everything else, the pair expertly deliver a message of empowerment and self-acceptance in the lyrics.
Vocally, No Rules is as complex as it gets, but Piispanen executes his side of the deal with ease, rising through key after key in a beautifully melodic way.
There is charm in the retro, joy in the melody, and euphoria in the vocals. No Rules is a song that will make an impact at Eurovision, whether you like it or not.
