It’s normal for Gåte to be boxed in by a genre, be it folk, rock, electronica or metal. However, the band kill convention and march in harmony to their own unique blend of Nordic sounds.
Ulveham is a controlled explosion. The song is haunting, intoxicating and euphoric. Even if the song’s nods to Nordic folklore and history aren’t universally understandable, the harmony of voice and instrumentation undeniably is.
Frontwoman Gunnhild Sundli’s voice reverberates and echoes almost endlessly, which casts and commands her control over the entire song. As the chorus blasts into life, every member of the band comes together to create a moment of dynamism and authenticity.
Ulveham is a winning song. Perhaps even a Eurovision-winning song.
