Netherlands: Joost Klein – Europapa Review

Image – Joost Klein

It’s painful just how inaccessible Europapa is because Joost Klein has penned polished poetry about the beauty of the Schengen Area, free movement and the interconnectivity of mainland Europe’s nations.

From word go, Europapa is new age noughties Europop. The beat is heavy and almost engulfs some beautifully simple piano chords which twinkle throughout the track.

Europapa’s hook in the chorus is a heavily synthesised vocal chanting: “Europa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa”. Repetition is the easiest hook in the book, and this is sure to get the track some deserved positive attention.

Just when Klein could lead the track into one final chorus, he switches gear into a heavy hardcore stomping breakdown. The music is synonymous with the Dutch rave dance scene. It’s loud and proud. More please.

Europapa is a tribute to Klein’s father who taught him an “expansive view of the world.” I expect the general reaction to the track won’t be expansive, instead narrow-minded.
